The CRSL Academy

The Culturally Responsive Leadership Academy is the first academy of this kind; a rich, deep, research-driven curriculum for school and district leaders at every level. Such profound learning happens when principals, superintendents, and other school leaders gather together in the same learning space to discuss the CRSL curriculum. To attend an Academy, you can either join an Academy that has already been scheduled, or contact us to schedule one that works for your district.

Academy Curriculum

Our curriculum offers five basic learning modules that match the prevailing literature on culturally responsive school leadership. Filled with pre-readings, practitioner activities, un-learnings and re-learnings, theorizing, critical self-reflections on leadership practice, distributed and shared leadership activity, school creation, and equity data analysis, the Academy is the first of its kind. Currently, we offer:

  • 2.5 Day, In-Person Academy: In this version of the Academy, participants get 2 full, and 1 half day of engaged PD and training.
  • 5-Day Virtual Academy: Due to COVID, we have developed a virtual version of our CRSL Academy. In this version of the Academy, participants get 5, half days of engaged virtual PD and training.

Who Can Participate?

While the academy is specifically for teacher-leaders, school-based leaders, district leaders, superintendents, and board members, other educators and staff have benefited deeply from our CRSL Academies. We are also partnering with university prep programs to offer CRSLA at universities across the globe.

Topics Discussed in the CRSL Academy

Various topics are covered at our CRSL Academy, including the histories of the communities school leaders serve, community epistemologies and current oppressive policies in schools. For example, this video encourages school leaders to unlearn and then rethink traditional clothing policies. The practice of unlearning and relearning can go a long way in the development of more humanizing policies.

Can Superintendents Attend CRSLA?

Is CRSLA only for principals and other school-based leaders? This video touches on a superintendent’s role in becoming culturally responsive school leaders. Superintendents comprise about 10% of Academy participants.

What are the CRSLA outcomes?

The benefit of CRSLA is that participants will walk away with deep knowledge, readily usable tools, and new skill sets that will lead to both short and long-term shifts in practice. Those shifts will lead to schools becoming more humanizing spaces for minoritized students.
